2P04 When Dilute Acid Meets Metals


Observation when metal is added to acid

Magnesium- Bubbles produced quickly.
Iron- Bubbles Produced slowly
Zinc-Bubbles formed at moderate speed.
Copper- NO bubbles formed.

Effect of gas on burning splint (all boxes) -Extinguished with a pop sound

Effect of gas on damp red litmus paper( all)- Remained red

Effect of gas on damp blue litmus paper(all) -Remained blue
Chemical formula- H2


Conclusion
1)Dilute acids react with reactive metals to produce hydrogen.

2) General equation
Metal+Dilute Acid- Salt+Hydrogen

3)We can identify that the gas produced is hydrogen by testing the gas with a burning splint. If the gas burns with a “pop” sound, it is hydrogen.

4) It has a pH value of 7 so it is neutral.

5) Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Copper.
