2) How has/will human activities in the Amazon regions affect the Allomerus decemarticulatus ants?

Deforestation is an example for human activities in the Amazon Forest. When we build homes, factories etc. land is reclaimed and forests are normally burned down. Therefore, we displace animals, including the Allomerus decemarticulatus ants. Furthermore, as their food source largely depends on making traps using plants to capture insects, deforestation would also mean the lost of traps, hence the ability to capture its prey also decreases tremendously. Therefore, with no food, the population figures will drop.

3a) From the extract, identify the different symbiotic relationships and cite the organisms involved.Clue: There are at least 3 types of relationship.

  1. Commensalism: Mould grows around structure and reinforce the plant, but does not affect it.
  2. Predation: Allomerus decemarticulatus ants feeds on insects that fly near their traps
  3. Competition: The host farm provides protein, and it has to be shared between the Allomerus decemarticulatus ants and the mould
b) For each type of relationship you have identified in (a), name another example of a pair of organisms depicting that relationship in nature.

  1. Commensalism: Remora fish and shark
  2. Predation: Snake and rabbit
  3. Competition: Snake and Eagle having similiar feeding habits
